About Ryan Van Lenning

I'm an Oakland-based writer focusing on issues of social justice, sustainability, and travel. I've written on a wide range of topics including urban agriculture/food justice, green jobs, abuse of corporate power, local community issues, international human rights issues, music festivals, ethical travel, religion & secularism, peace & militarism. I strive to place stories and issues within a broader context and to link the local with the global.

My experience ranges from being the faculty co-editor the Humanities Student Journal (Interface) at Sinclair College to writing feature articles for Terrain Magazine: Northern California’s Environmental Magazine (on a food justice organization and recession & green jobs) and for Oakland Local.  My work also appears on Truthout, Green Options, Ethical Traveler, Food First, and Matador Change.

My academic background is in philosophy (B.A.) and humanities/comparative religion (M.A.). For 5 years I taught at a community college in Ohio, where I created courses in Environmental Ethics and World Religions: Peace and Violence and was faculty mentor to the student club Think Tank.
